Ecuador Viaduct Dawn Over Brick Kilns and Cypress

by Angela Giles

Cold silver dawn light washes the curved concrete viaduct, casting sharp shadows against the dry earth below. Massive brick kilns rise in the background, their reddish-orange stacks against the pale morning sky. Tall, dark cypress trees stand sentinel beside the industrial structures, their needle-like foliage dense and rigid. Heat shimmer distorts the air above the sun-struck ground, creating a wavering veil over the moving water beneath the bridge pier. The viaduct curves gently from the left, leading toward the distant horizon where the infrastructure meets the landscape. Rough concrete textures show weathering, while the water reflects the muted gray of the sky. A small patch of dry grass rests on the base of a support pillar.
