Alpine Tarns and Cascades in Floodplain Near Bishkek

by Donna Barnett

Midsummer sunlight floods the wet floodplain near Bishkek, turning the ground into a vast, shimmering mirror. A series of dark alpine tarns connects in a jagged chain, linked by thin cascades that rush over smooth, rain-slicked stones. Wind whips the surface of the water, distorting the reflection of the sky into fractured shards of blue and white. The water appears deep and cold, against the bright, tropical intensity of the overhead light. Along the edges, wet gravel and sparse green vegetation rest on the shifting banks. at the edge is the sharp, dark line where a cascade plunges, breaking the glassy surface and sending a spray of droplets into the still air.
