Bakery Preparation in Kathmandu

Under a flat, overcast sky, the narrow alley behind a traditional Kathmandu bakery hums with quiet industry. A stone mortar and pestle sit near a low wooden counter where a woman’s hands are buried in dough, sending a fine cloud of flour dust into the air to settle on the dark, pitted stone surface. Beside her, a stack of woven mats leans against a weathered wooden pillar, their intricate patterns against the smooth, damp brickwork of the adjacent wall. Metal stools are overturned on a nearby table, waiting for customers, while a rusted cabinet latch on a storage locker glints faintly in the diffuse light.
