Baker Working in Naples
by Earl Kline
A narrow Naples alleyway bakes under the harsh clear afternoon sun, where a local baker stands on a worn wooden step stool to reach the high shelf of a rustic wood-fired oven. Flour dust settles thickly on the dark stone floor around his boots, catching the strong edge light that spills from the open doorway behind him. The rough texture of the aged brick walls contrasts with the smooth, grease-sheened metal of a kettle lid resting on a nearby workbench, at the base of the scene in authentic daily labor. One mixing spoon lies abandoned in a pile of dough as a shadow from a passing pedestrian stretches across the frame, momentarily obscuring the baker's hands.
