Baking Sourdough in Auckland

A cramped, sun-bleached kitchen in a weatherboard house near Ponsonby Road, where flat noon light washes out the faded linoleum. A woman in a floral apron leans over a scarred pine table, her hands dusted with flour as she scores a loaf of sourdough in a battered aluminum pan. Beside the bread, a yellow measuring tape is coiled next to a ceramic recipe tin labeled 'Sourdough Starter.' A white terrier sits patiently by her feet, eyes fixed on the crust. On the windowsill, a scrub brush rests beside a jar of water, while finger smudges mar the glass pane, blurring the view of the street outside.
