Astronomer Carries Eyepieces at Dusk in Lesotho

by Beatrice Bradford

Copper-toned light washes over the wet, dark stone of the observatory deck in Lesotho. An astronomer in a thick, insulated parka walks across the surface, clutching cylindrical eyepieces wrapped in protective cloth. The dry season air hangs heavy and humid, leaving glistening droplets on the metal railing and the subject's shoulders. The horizon glows with a soft, fading warmth that wraps the edges of the frame. Heavy boots press firmly against the damp concrete, leaving faint, dark impressions. The eyepieces reflect the dimming sky, their lenses dark and unpolished. One droplet slides down the side of the nearest lens, catching the last light.
