Astronomer Calibrates Telescope on Alsace Outcrop

by Earl Farmer

Starlight spills over the jagged granite of an Alsace geology outcrop, illuminating a lone astronomer adjusting a large telescope. The observer stands in a heavy coat against the early spring chill, hands moving methodically on the instrument's controls. Dramatic, dark clouds drift across the sky above, breaking only to reveal faint pinpricks of distant stars. A soft, pale ground glow reflects off the wet rocks, creating a cool blue cast on the metal surfaces. Converging lines of the telescope mount and the rock ledge draw toward a vanishing point in the distance. at the edge is the reflection of a single bright star in the polished brass of the telescope's eyepiece.
