Bright midday light reflects off the water surface, casting soft highlights across the thick-rimmed spectacles worn by the retired astronomer. The subject stands against a backdrop of late autumn trees, their leaves turning brown and brittle under the humid air that hangs just above the ground. A dark wool coat covers the shoulders, its texture rough against the smooth, cool metal of the glasses. The kind eyes look upward, framed by generous negative space that isolates the figure against the muted coastal tones of the sky and distant shoreline. A small droplet of water rests on the rim of the left lens, glistening sharply against the dark frame.
