Copper Light Observatory Deck at Dusk in along a rocky geology outcrop near Des Moines

Copper Light Observatory Deck at Dusk

by Crystal Mooney

Copper-toned light spills across a scientific instrument array perched on a jagged geology outcrop near Des Moines. Dust particles float in beams filtering through the skylight above the observatory deck. Cold metal housings glisten with condensation beading along their seams. Deliberately arranged equipment sits in precise rows, their surfaces reflecting the fading day. Converging architectural lines lead toward a vanishing point deep in the structure. Rough stone textures contrast with the smooth, engineered curves of the instruments. Shadows lengthen across the deck, marking the final moments before nightfall. A small droplet of moisture rests on the edge of a sensor housing, catching the last glow of the sky.
