Alluvial Fan Canyon Rim Light Blue Hour in across a floodplain after rain near Las Vegas

Alluvial Fan Canyon Rim Light Blue Hour

by Ian Thornton

Deep indigo shadows blanket the desert floodplain as a massive alluvial fan spreads from the canyon mouth. The cool season air holds a visible heat haze that shimmers above the wet, dark gravel. A sharp rim of twilight light catches the upper ridges of the fan, separating the textured sediment from the blackening sky. Fine layers of silt and rock create a stepped topography that recedes into the distance. The wet ground reflects the fading blue of the sky, while the dry, dusty slopes remain in silhouette. A final line of fractured rock defines the canyon edge against the fading light.
