Dawn Welding Flare Reflects Quarry Water Sump Walls

by Jude Benson

Orange welding flare cuts through the pre-dawn darkness, illuminating the rough, wet surfaces of a quarry water sump. The still water mirrors the cut stone walls rising steeply on either side, their gray faces marked by heavy industrial tooling. Sodium-vapor lamps cast long, yellow shadows across the damp ground, against the sharp, artificial orange glow. Above, dramatic clouds gather in the low light, their dark undersides visible against the fading night sky. The Dutch angle tilt tilts the horizon, making the stone walls lean heavily inward. One reflection of a metal ladder rail ripples on the water's surface, breaking the mirror image of the quarry face.
