Silhouetted Alluvial Fan Before Sunrise in along a wave-cut shoreline near Nouakchott

Silhouetted Alluvial Fan Before Sunrise

by Lydia Crosby

Deep shadow swallows the massive alluvial fan spreading across the wave-cut shoreline near Nouakchott. The fan's sedimentary layers form a dark, jagged silhouette against the pale, pre-dawn sky. A thin rim of cool, pale light traces the highest ridges of the geologic formation, separating the heavy earth from the clear, empty air above. The foreground reveals the flat, damp texture of the shoreline where the tide once receded. Fine dust settles on the fan's slopes, visible only as a subtle shift in tone against the encroaching darkness. The highest peak catches the first hint of dawn, glowing with a faint, icy edge that defines the mountain's steep descent.
