Steam Rising from Volcanic Spring at Dawn in along a wave-cut shoreline near Zermatt

Steam Rising from Volcanic Spring at Dawn

by Penny Weaver

Pale mist curls upward from a steaming pool set against a dark, wave-cut shoreline near Zermatt. Early spring light breaks in a thin, sharp rim along the top edge of the vapor, separating the white plume from the deep blue shadows of the surrounding rock. Wind whips the steam horizontally, stretching the vapor into long, translucent ribbons that drift across the grey stones. The water surface remains dark and still beneath the rising heat, against the chaotic motion of the gas above. Rough textures of the volcanic rock frame the pool, while the low angle of the dawn sun casts long, cool shadows across the wet ground. A faint reflection of the steam hangs on the water's edge where the light catches the moisture.
