Aerial Morocco Sand Dunes Noon Shadows

by Colette Kemp

Pale ochre sand dunes rise from the desert floor beneath a perfectly clear sky. Sharp, dark crescent shadows cut across the ridges where the sun hangs directly overhead. Below the dunes, a geometric grid of irrigation canals cuts through the earth in straight, angular lines. The water in the channels reflects a soft, diffused light, suggesting recent rain has settled the dust. The contrast between the organic curves of the sand and the rigid, man-made straightness of the fields creates a stark visual divide. A fine layer of moisture darkens the soil along the canal banks, creating a deep brown edge against the lighter sand. The entire landscape stretches out in a silent, detached survey of earth and water.
