Winter River Islands in Paris Mist in high over salt ponds and causeways near Menilmontant, Paris

Winter River Islands in Paris Mist

by Dorothy Pitts

Silver floodwater spreads across the frame, braided by narrow river islands that cut through the high ground near Menilmontant. Thick winter mist softens the edges of salt ponds and causeways, blending the built environment into the water. Diagonal lines of land and water create a sharp cartographic tension against the gray sky. The early evening light reflects off the wet surfaces, turning the channels into ribbons of pale gray and silver. Bare earth patches on the islands show rough textures, against the smooth, fluid flow of the flood. A thin layer of fog obscures the distant horizon, leaving only the immediate geometry of the waterways visible. The edge of a concrete causeway meets the water in a straight, dark line.
