Virga Curtain Over Sicilian Storm Plain in across a storm-bright plain in Sicily

Virga Curtain Over Sicilian Storm Plain

by Cole Villegas

Soft, diffused light after a passing storm illuminates a vast, flat plain in Sicily. A distinct sheet of cirrostratus clouds hangs low, from which a curtain of virga falls, dissolving into the dry air before reaching the ground. The landscape is a tapestry of late autumn earth tones, with patches of dried grass and scattered olive trees dotting the horizon. The sky occupies the upper third, contrasting the pale, wet-looking cloud base against the brighter, clearing blue above. Dust motes are absent, but the air appears thick with moisture that has not yet evaporated. The virga creates a vertical texture that breaks the horizontal lines of the terrain. A dark, wet patch on the soil near the foreground marks where the rain likely landed moments before.
