Surreal Construction Survey in Moldovan Winter Mud
by Vanessa Lane
A heavy steel survey tripod stands anchored in churned, grey winter mud beneath the towering legs of a construction crane. The ground is a mix of wet earth and scattered sawdust, illuminated by harsh, clear mountain light. Every vertical surface, from the metal legs of the tripod to the wooden stakes and the crane's steel girders, is draped in thick, vibrant green moss and grass. This vegetation grows sideways, defying gravity, clinging to the sides of the equipment as if pulled by a horizontal force. Thin white string lines stretch taut across the frame, converging toward a vanishing point in the distance. Fine particles of concrete dust and damp earth float in the air, catching the bright sunlight. The moss creates a jagged, living edge against the cold, industrial steel. One blade of grass bends sharply against a steel bracket.
