Surveyor Transit on Scaffolded Missouri Facade at Dusk

by Corey Avery

A brass and steel surveyor's transit rests securely on a black tripod, positioned against a scaffolding structure climbing the side of a building. Thick mist rests on the metal poles and wooden planks, softening the edges of the urban construction site. The dry season air holds the dust settled on the equipment's surfaces. Distant town lights begin to glow on the horizon, casting a faint orange wash over the wet steel. The instrument's telescope points forward, its glass reflecting the dim ambient light. Rust speckles the lower tripod legs, evidence of weather exposure. Shadows lengthen across the scaffolding base as the sky darkens. at the edge is a small droplet of condensation clinging to the transit's adjustment knob.
