Surreal Cedar Blooming from Concrete in Liberia
by Brooks Kirk
Clear dry mountain light illuminates a towering cedar of Lebanon standing in a Liberia meadow heavy with monsoon blooms. The tree's layered horizontal branches stretch outward against low-hanging clouds that obscure the distant horizon. At the base, a gray concrete slab lies cracked and weathered, yet vibrant flowers erupt directly from the fissures in the stone. These blooms cluster tightly around the jagged edges of the broken surface, defying the expectation of soil. The green needles of the cedar contrast with the soft, chaotic explosion of petals rising from the hard material. Sunlight catches the wet texture of the petals and the rough grain of the concrete, at the base of the impossible growth in sharp, visible reality. at the edge is a single bright petal resting on a sharp shard of the cracked gray slab.
