Silhouetted Cypress Knees in Swedish Winter Swamp

Dark water fills the foreground, broken by the jagged, knobby protrusions of cypress knees rising in stark silhouette. Ferns line the forest floor, their fronds stiff and brown against the winter chill. The sky above holds a dramatic expanse of heavy, layered clouds, illuminated by the last blue light of evening. This backlighting turns the trees into black shapes against the fading gray. Layers of depth recede into the distance, where the horizon blurs into the gloom. The water surface remains still, reflecting the sharp angles of the wood and the soft gradient of the twilight sky.
