Echinacea Bloom Field at Dawn Mist in beside stacked hay bales in Connecticut

Echinacea Bloom Field at Dawn Mist

by Jacqueline Phelps

Purple coneflowers stretch across a rectangular farm plot in late summer Connecticut, their petals heavy with morning dew. Directly above, stacked hay bales line the field edge, their golden fibers rough against the soft flower heads. Low dawn light cuts through a thin layer of mist, illuminating drifting chaff and dust particles that float above the soil. The ground appears dark and damp where shadows fall between the flower stems. Sunlight touches the tops of the blooms, creating bright highlights on the purple centers while the lower petals remain in cool shadow. One strand of dried grass rests on the soil near the bales.
