Sugar Cane Field Oskemen Hay Bales Midmorning

by Cynthia Peck

Tall green stalks of sugar cane rise in dense rows beside a neat stack of rectangular hay bales wrapped in twine. Bright midmorning light cuts through the clear dry mountain air, illuminating the wet sheen of early summer leaves. A light drizzle coats the surfaces, turning the stalks into vertical ribbons of emerald and the bales into textured blocks of dried straw. The ground shows patches of dark, saturated soil where the rain has settled. In the distance, the faint outline of the Oskemen landscape blends with the grey sky. Water droplets rest on the lowest leaves, heavy and clear against the rough fiber of the bales.
