Stone-Fused Chair in Kelp Forest Water in through a forest of kelp fronds near Durban

Stone-Fused Chair in Kelp Forest Water

by Jordan Vargas

Bright late-afternoon sunlight pierces the exceptionally clear water of a Durban kelp forest, illuminating a wooden dining chair that has partially turned into stone. The transformation begins at the seat legs, where smooth rock grain perfectly mimics the original wood texture, while the backrest remains solid timber. Surrounding the impossible furniture, a dense school of silver bait fish swirls in a tight vortex, their scales catching the light. Tall kelp fronds sway gently in the slow-moving current, framing the scene. The water surface ripples softly overhead, casting shifting patterns of light across the submerged chair. Fine sand settles on the rocky base, against the remaining varnished wood. One ray of sun highlights the transition point where wood becomes rock.
