Stilt House Over Water in Benin Train Terminal

by Giselle Sullivan

Soft overcast light floods the vast interior of a restored train terminal near Benin City, illuminating a wooden stilt house structure built directly over a shallow pool of water. Dark timber pilings rise from the reflective surface, their rough-hewn beams holding a steep thatched roof against the high, arched metal trusses of the industrial station above. A Dutch angle tilt tilts the entire space, making the vertical stilts lean sharply against the receding lines of the train platform. Water droplets rest on the weathered wood, catching the diffuse gray light while the still water below mirrors the dark silhouette of the structure's base. At the edge of the frame, a rusted rail runs parallel to the water's edge, at the base of the architectural experiment in the station's history.
