Wooden Stilt House Over Tropical Lagoon Near Mombasa
by Drake Lucero
Weathered timber pilings rise from the turquoise water, supporting a raised wooden structure with a thatched roof. The lagoon stretches endlessly, its surface rippling under the bright late-afternoon sun. Heavy rain clouds gather in the distance, casting deep gray shadows across the water while the foreground remains lit by golden light. A thick layer of atmospheric haze blurs the horizon line, softening the distant shoreline. Wooden planks on the deck show signs of constant exposure to salt and moisture, their grain darkened by wetness. The stilts cast sharp, elongated reflections onto the shifting water below, creating a complex pattern of light and dark lines that ripple with every small wave. The sky above is a mix of brilliant blue and ominous gray, signaling the approaching tropical storm.
