Stone Well with Winch in Beira Terminal

by Sylvia Wiggins

Copper-toned light spills across the interior of a restored train terminal in Beira, illuminating an aged stone well constructed from rough-hewn blocks. A rusted iron bucket hangs from a wooden winch mechanism above the circular opening. Rain streaks down the high windows, blurring the background where the terminal's arched roof meets the sky. The wet stone surface glistens, reflecting the low sun that casts long, sharp shadows across the floor. Fine mist settles on the metal pulley, and water droplets bead along the edge of the stone rim. One thread of moisture runs down the side of the well, marking the path of recent rain against the dark depths below.
