Steam Rising from Subway Entrance in Vaulted Atrium

by Lilly Brady

Thick white steam billows upward from the open grate of a subway entrance, swirling into the high, vaulted ceiling of a vast atrium. The space is enclosed by heavy stone walls that curve overhead, creating a cavernous interior lit by soft, diffused light. Overcast skies outside cast a gray wash across the scene, with faint reflections of the water-filled canal visible on the polished floor. The wet stone steps leading down to the station appear slick and dark. Long, straight lines of the architecture guide the gaze toward the dark mouth of the tunnel where the steam originates. Patches of moss rest on the damp lower corners of the arches, hinting at the transition between seasons. One puddle near the edge mirrors the pale, cloudy sky above.
