Grey predawn light spills over the top of a wet stone staircase where commuters climb from a shadowed underpass. The steps glisten with recent moisture, reflecting the dim rim light that outlines the silhouettes of people moving upward. To the left, a shuttered arcade displays closed metal shutters, their surfaces dull against the deep shadow of the underpass entrance. Heat shimmer distorts the air above the pavement, creating a wavering, liquid effect on the grey ground. The composition tilts sharply, showing the steep incline and the tension of the early morning ascent. A puddle at the bottom edge catches a faint, distorted reflection of the rising figures.
