Moonlit Stepwell Rain Reflections Pavlodar in beneath a wind-cut desert escarpment near Pavlodar

Moonlit Stepwell Rain Reflections Pavlodar

by Lacey Norris

Cold silver moonlight illuminates the stone tiers of a descending stepwell carved into a wind-sculpted desert escarpment near Pavlodar. Rain streaks vertically through the dark air, striking the still water at the bottom and rippling the surface into fractured reflections. The wet stone steps appear slick and dark, absorbing the light while the water surface mirrors the overcast sky and the vertical lines of the rain. Early winter air hangs heavy, visible in the sharp, cold quality of the light that cuts through the gloom. Perfect vertical symmetry exists where the descending masonry meets its inverted twin in the deep water. One raindrop disturbs the surface, sending concentric ripples across the mirrored stone.
