Silhouetted Sea Lions Riva Split Twilight in beside a volcanic drop-off near Riva, Split

Silhouetted Sea Lions Riva Split Twilight

by Vivian Burton

Indigo twilight washes the volcanic drop-off near Riva, Split, turning a cluster of sea lions into stark black silhouettes against the fading sky. The animals rest on dark, jagged rocks that jut from exceptionally clear water, their forms defined only by the soft rim of light grazing their backs. Slow-moving surface ripples distort the reflection of the colony, creating a liquid mirror that fractures their shapes. Early winter air leaves the scene devoid of vegetation, focusing attention on the smooth, wet texture of the stone and the dense, compact bodies of the marine mammals. The water remains still, holding the deep blue hue of the post-sunset hour without a single whitecap to break the surface. A faint reflection of the lead sea lion's ear hangs suspended in the glassy water below its chin.
