Red Cardinal Perched on Snowy Branch in beside a tidal inlet in Yukon

Red Cardinal Perched on Snowy Branch

by Penny Ferguson

Vivid crimson feathers stand out against the stark white snow covering the ground and clinging to a bare branch. The male cardinal sits alert, its black mask and pointed crest sharply defined. Dappled sunlight falls through the sparse, leafless canopy of the surrounding trees, creating patches of bright illumination and cool blue shadows on the icy surface. The background dissolves into a soft blur of pale winter tones, isolating the bird's intense gaze. A thin layer of frost coats the rough bark beneath the bird's feet, at the base of the creature in the deep cold of the Yukon winter.
