Rusty Hooks in Abandoned Fish Plant Florence

by Priya Wilkerson

Soft gray light from a clear winter day after rain illuminates the interior of an abandoned fish processing facility beside a blast furnace near Santo Spirito in Florence. Thick rust coats rows of heavy metal hooks hanging from the high, exposed ceiling beams. The concrete floor shows deep cracks filled with damp, dark soil and scattered debris. In the background, the massive, soot-stained brickwork of the industrial furnace rises against the pale sky, its surface textured with age and weathering. Bare winter trees frame the distant windows, their branches stark and leafless. Moisture coats the cold metal surfaces, and one rusted chain hangs loosely near a broken window, its links reflecting the muted light. A streak of water runs down the grimy glass, ending at a jagged edge of the frame.
