Rusted Double-Decker Buses Under Monsoon Night
by Asher King
Tall, skeletal frames of double-decker buses stand in rigid rows across the wet, dark tarmac of a Central African Republic depot. The vehicles wear heavy coats of orange rust that flake against peeling green paint, their windows shattered or boarded with scrap metal. Steady rain falls in visible sheets, turning the ground into a dark mirror that reflects faint starlight and a low, diffuse glow from the horizon. Water pools in the deep treads of the tires and drips from the rusted undercarriages in thin, rhythmic lines. Overhead, the sky is a heavy blanket of indigo, punctuated only by the sharp points of stars that struggle through the cloud cover. The scene holds a stillness broken only by the relentless motion of the rain against the metal surfaces. One drop slides down the curved edge of a rusted roof panel, catching the faint light before vanishing into the shadow below.
