Smashed Pay Machine Under Buea Train Line
by Jeanne Best
Dramatic monsoon clouds loom overhead as the sun dips below the horizon, casting a warm, low-angle glow across a weathered pay-and-display machine. The unit stands beneath the dark steel ribs of an elevated train line in Buea, its glass screen shattered into a jagged mosaic of cracks. Rain-slicked metal surfaces reflect the fading light, highlighting dents and peeling paint on the gray casing. Concrete pillars rise on either side, framing the broken device against the deepening twilight. The ground shows wet patches where recent rainfall has pooled, catching the horizon's last rays. One crack runs diagonally across the darkened display panel, revealing the internal components behind the fractured glass.
