Rusty Fire Escape Ladder Over Kyoto Dumpster
by Ethan Owens
Copper-toned light washes over a weathered iron fire escape ladder suspended above a grimy metal dumpster in a narrow back alley. The ladder, painted in peeling ochre and rust, hangs from a concrete underpass supporting an elevated train line. Wet pavement reflects the fading sky, while low-hanging clouds press against the steel girders above. Autumn leaves, turned deep crimson and burnt orange, rest on the damp ground and catch on the chain-link fence lining the alley walls. The dumpster, dented and stained with oil, sits directly beneath the ladder's shadow. Rain-slicked surfaces shimmer with a glossy sheen, mirroring the overhead structure's dark silhouette against the dimming sky. One rusted bolt at the ladder's base holds a droplet of water, trembling on the edge of a flaking paint chip.
