Rope Hanging Into Black Cistern Amid Ivy Ruins

by Ella Cross

Clear dry mountain light floods the late morning, illuminating a thick synthetic rope descending into the inky void of a circular cistern. Ivy drapes heavily over weathered masonry walls, their green leaves against the grey stone. The rope, frayed at the edges where it rubs against the rim, hangs taut against the dark water below. Wind whips the trailing vines, creating a blur of motion against the static architecture. Layers of depth recede from the rough foreground stones into the shadowed interior of the ruin. at the edge is a single knot tied tight around the rim, holding the rope in place against the gusts.
