Crumbling Adobe Ruin Melting Into Desert Floor

by Tommy Forbes

Earthen walls of a roofless structure dissolve directly into the shifting sand of the Mauritanian desert floor. The first rays of sunrise strike the interior nave, illuminating floating dust particles that dance in the empty space. Rough, cracked mud bricks show layers of erosion where the structure once stood. Sunlight spills across the uneven ground, casting long, soft shadows that stretch toward the remaining wall fragments. The texture of the crumbling adobe blends seamlessly with the surrounding dunes, creating a seamless transition between built form and natural landscape. Fine grains of sand accumulate in the hollows of the walls, marking the slow reclamation of the space by the wind and heat of late summer.
