Rime Ice on Thunderheads After Rain

by Irina Rich

Thick white rime coats the jagged peaks of stacked thunderheads in a surreal early afternoon light. From a birds eye perspective, the massive cloud formations resemble a frozen mountain range where ice crystals cling to every edge. Instead of rising, thick gray smoke pours downward from the cloud bases like heavy, viscous liquid, pooling in the valleys between the peaks. The cool season air has transformed the storm into a static, tender landscape of white and slate gray. Soft light diffuses through the rime, turning the heavy falling smoke into a translucent curtain that rests against the icy cloud faces. at the edge is a sharp, crystalline ridge of frost catching the light against the dark, liquid smoke.
