Rice drying on mats in Saudi tea plantation fog

by Keith Barnes

Golden rice grains spread across woven mats rest on the damp earth at the edge of a tea plantation in Saudi Arabia. Predawn darkness wraps the upper two-thirds of the view, while a thick, white fog fills only the bottom third, creating a horizontal line that cuts the ground like a blade. Rim light traces the rough texture of the mats and the curved edges of the woven fibers. The heavy overcast sky presses down in deep shadow, rendering the distant granary walls as dark silhouettes. Rice stalks stand stiff against the moisture. The fog edge remains perfectly straight, separating the solid ground from the void below.
