Rice Mats Drying in Zhangjiajie Terraces

Heavy overcast skies press low above the terraced rice paddies of Zhangjiajie, diffusing the tropical light into a soft, gray wash. Woven mats spread across the stone ledges hold layers of golden rice grains, their silhouettes dark against the bright, cloudy backdrop. The turn of the season is visible in the muted tones of the stalks and the damp, dark stone of the granary walls nearby. Workers move with weather-shaped practicality, their figures small and indistinct as they tend to the harvest. The texture of the woven bamboo contrasts with the smooth, wet surface of the stone, while the rice piles create rough, organic mounds that break the geometric lines of the terraces. One shadow falls across the edge of a mat, marking the precise angle of the diffuse afternoon sun.
