Red Bulbs on Observatory Catwalk Above Foggy Valley

by Carolyn Kinney

Vivid red alignment bulbs glow steadily along the metal railing of a narrow catwalk, casting sharp, circular pools of light onto the weathered steel grating. Below, a thick blanket of ground fog fills the valley, obscuring the terrain and rising to meet the structure's legs. Distant town lights shimmer as a soft orange haze on the horizon, against the deep indigo of the twilight sky. Exposed scientific instruments and pipes line the walkway, their surfaces catching the cool ambient light and the warm red reflections. The metal textures appear rugged and functional, hinting at high-altitude exposure. A faint salt wind suggestion is visible in the slight blur of loose cables hanging near the edge, while the fog remains perfectly still against the rigid geometry of the equipment. at the edge is a single red reflection dancing on a wet patch of the steel floor.
