Red Lit Observatory Stairwell Noon Rain Biarritz

by Graham Byrd

Steel stair rails curve upward along the right third of the frame, glowing with the soft, saturated red of night bulbs that have been left on under the harsh glare of noon. A fine mist hangs in the air, turning the bright white sunlight into a diffuse sheet that catches the raindrops suspended between the metal steps. The platform floor shows the texture of wet, weathered concrete, scarred by wind and salt. Instruments mounted on the railing gleam with precision, their dials and lenses reflecting the flat, unshadowed light of the overcast sky. Red light pools on the wet metal, creating sharp color contrasts against the grey steel and the pale, washed-out horizon of the Atlantic. Water beads on the handrails, running down in thin, clear lines that disappear into the dark gaps between the steps.
