Aerial Tea Terraces in Lhasa Fog at Twilight

by Conner Swain

Steel-blue twilight washes over the steep mountain slope near Norbulingka, where tea terraces carve geometric patterns into the earth. Low-hanging clouds drift through the valley, partially obscuring the layered fields and creating a soft, diffused light that mutes the greens and browns of the early summer vegetation. From directly above, the terraces appear as a precise grid of stepped contours, their edges sharp against the mist. In the distance, the city begins to glow with warm yellow points of light, contrasting the cool atmospheric tones of the high altitude. A thin ribbon of fog rests in the shadowed crevices between the stone retaining walls, showing the depth of the carved landscape.
