Rain Sparkling on Substation Insulators at Lock in at a canal lock chamber near Ranchi

Rain Sparkling on Substation Insulators at Lock

by Melvin Lloyd

Thick mist rests on the air above a canal lock chamber near Ranchi, softening the midday light into a diffuse gray wash. Three ceramic substation insulators stand in sharp relief against the hazy backdrop, their ribbed surfaces glistening with fresh raindrops. Floodlights mounted high on the steel structure cast pools of artificial white light that catch every droplet, turning the wet ceramic into a field of scattered diamonds. The dry season keeps the surrounding vegetation sparse and brown, against the slick, dark metal framework of the lock gates. Water droplets slide slowly down the vertical grooves of the porcelain, catching the artificial glow while the thick mist blurs the distant riverbank. One drop hangs from the lowest rib, refracting the light before falling into the shadowed water below.
