Dripping Umbrellas on Subway Stairs in Brescia
by Casey Lam
Hard coastal glare slices across a wet concrete staircase leading down to a Brescia subway entrance. Raindrops rest on the black nylon of several closed umbrellas resting against the metal handrail, their tips dripping steadily onto the gray pavement. A fluorescent convenience store sign glows with cool white light in the background, casting a sharp, artificial sheen on the slick stone steps. The dry season air holds no mist, only the distinct, rhythmic fall of water from fabric to ground. Strong leading lines of the stairwell draw the eye downward into the shadowed tunnel mouth, where the late-afternoon sun meets the artificial glow, creating a stark contrast between the bright orange street light and the deep blue shadows of the underground. one drop of water hangs from the rim of the nearest umbrella, suspended before hitting the wet stone.
