Rain-Sparkling Substation Insulators at Twilight in along a dam spillway in Morelia

Rain-Sparkling Substation Insulators at Twilight

by Hailey Johns

Indigo twilight washes the wet concrete of a dam spillway in Morelia. High above the ground, a row of porcelain substation insulators hangs suspended against the deepening sky. Each ribbed segment catches the reflection of nearby floodlights, turning droplets of monsoon rain into sharp points of white fire. Water sheets off the metal framework below, creating a shimmering mirror that doubles the electric glow. The low angle emphasizes the sheer scale of the engineered structure against the dark, heavy air. Beads of water rest on the ceramic curves, refracting the artificial light into tiny, distinct stars. A final bead rolls down the side of the nearest insulator, leaving a dark, wet trail on the dry porcelain.
