Pumping Station Under Naples Cable-Stayed Bridge
by Duane Moss
Hard midday sunlight strikes the rough concrete surfaces of a pumping station situated beneath a massive cable-stayed bridge span in Naples. Thick steel cables stretch diagonally from a central pylon, their shadows cutting sharp, dark lines across the wet machinery and the lowland canal below. The water reflects the pale blue sky, disturbed only by the rhythmic churn of the intake pipes. Sea haze softens the distant horizon where the city meets the Mediterranean. Heavy iron grates cover the intake channels, and rust stains mark the lower edges of the concrete walls. A cluster of green reeds grows along the canal bank, indicating early spring. The diagonal cables create strong leading lines that guide the gaze from the foreground machinery toward the bridge tower. A drop of water rests on the edge of a metal valve housing.
