Boatbuilder and Train Car in Naples Harbor
by Jo Munoz
Flat noon light bleaches the stone quay near Quartieri Spagnoli while dramatic clouds stack high above the harbor wall. A boatbuilder stands before a massive steel passenger train car that rises impossibly from the wet pavement, its side pressed against the ancient masonry. The train's windows reflect the harsh sky, and rainwater pools around the metal wheels, mirroring the builder's tools scattered on the ground. Late summer heat shimmers off the stone, creating a stark contrast between the organic wear of the harbor and the rigid, industrial geometry of the embedded carriage. The builder leans in to inspect a rivet on the lower chassis, his shadow stretching long across the damp cobblestones toward the water's edge. A drop of water rolls down the train's corrugated side, landing on the builder's boot.
