Deep shadow pools beneath the steel beams of an elevated train line in Valparaiso, where low-hanging monsoon clouds press against the sky. A flock of pigeons bursts upward from the wet asphalt, their feathers catching a sharp rim of pale dawn light that slices through the gloom. The ground glistens with recent rain, reflecting the gray concrete pillars and the rusted metal of the track above. Color comes from the dull slate of the birds and the muted red of distant buildings visible through the mist. Tension hangs in the damp air as wings blur against the heavy sky, while one drop of water slides down a jagged edge of the concrete barrier.
