Cuttlefish Changing Color on Coral Wall Denpasar

by Calvin Slater

Sunlight penetrates the exceptionally clear monsoon water, illuminating a cuttlefish pressed against a textured coral wall. The marine creature shifts its skin pattern from mottled browns to pale creams, mimicking the rough limestone surface beside it. Blue water stretches into the background, marked by slow-moving surface ripples that distort the midday light into shifting silver patches across the reef. The coral wall displays jagged ridges and small crevices where the cuttlefish's mantle blends seamlessly with the stone. Fine sediment floats in the current, catching the bright overhead sun. The animal's eye remains dark and focused, reflecting the bright surface above.
